Mission
The Dwelling
Place provides transitional housing opportunities and support services in
Montgomery County for families experiencing homelessness, helping them to
achieve and maintain
self-sufficiency.
History
The Dwelling Place was established in 1988 by a group
of community activists and volunteers who were concerned with the growing
numbers of homeless families in our local community. They founded a program that
would assist families as they transitioned from homelessness to
self-sufficiency. Today an independent community Board of Directors governs the
organization. We receive support through the City of Gaithersburg,
Montgomery County, and the Federal Government. We also work closely to
partner with individuals, faith groups, schools, service clubs, and businesses
in our community in order to offer them the opportunity to be a part of helping
these families.
About our Program
Our program is a program designed for families. It allows them to stay together while The Dwelling Place staff provides support and guidance. During their time in the program, family members are able to address the issues that led them to homeless. Everything that The Dwelling Place does reflects a belief that the potential represented by this county's homeless families -- both children and adults -- should not be wasted.
Heads of families accepted into The Dwelling Place are ready to address the challenge of making life-long changes. They agree to work with the program's case managers to develop and carry out a personal action plan for achieving family independence. The case managers provide personalized support -- the formula for sustainable change.

Upcoming Fundraising Events
The Dwelling Place is partnering with Xi Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority to raise funds for the Jackson family in Poolesville who Is having a home built for them on Extreme Makeover Home Edition.
We eould greatly appreciate your tax deductible donation to help with the Jackson family's new home. All funds raised will be placed in a fund with Sandy Spring Bank to be used for long-term care and support, such as real estate taxes, utilities, and home maintenance.

Sean DeFrehn, our Board President, will be swimming in a 12.5 mile race around the Island of Key West in Florida. He will be doing so to raise money and awareness for The Dwelling Place. - 12.5 miles – a long way to swim but not nearly as long as the walk clients of The Dwelling Place make to self sufficiency.
- 22,591 – the number of strokes it will take to get around the island and the number of sheltered homeless in the State of Maryland.
- 2,546 – the number of miles Sean will travel to and from the race and the number of homeless people in Montgomery County that are part of families.
Running for Others
Mark Young, one of the members of Cedarbrook Community Church in Clarksburg, MD (one of our staunchest supporters) is raising awareness of and funds for The Dwelling Place through a unique campaign called “Running For Others.” Mark will also be running for Germantown Helps and the Make a Wish Foundation.
